With a new Fallout rumored to be on the way, we take a look at possible cities that would make a great Fallout.

In the Fallout series, we have seen Los Angeles and San Diego (Fallout), San Francisco and Reno (Fallout 2) Washington DC (Fallout 3) and the Las Vegas/Lake Mead area (New Vegas) represented. Each game brings a new geographical area (SoCal, Pacific Northwest, East Coast, and Southwest), but with Fallout 4 to be announced at E3 this year, let's take a look at some of the most likely and hinted candidates that would make a part of a great game.

After all, the richest character in every game is the area itself. And for Fallout 4, possible cities include:

1. Boston

Boston has been rumored for years. Scant documents released have pointed to Boston's way, as has talk of developers visiting Boston and Cambridge (home of MIT and Harvard).

The games themselves have also hinted at Boston, with a major mission in Fallout 3 concerning runaway androids from “The Commonwealth”, what Boston has become in two centuries. New technologies, and a big Blade Runner-like android problem offer some exciting storylines. Boston hasn't really shown up in post-apocalyptic pop culture, but thanks to movies like The Departed and 21, and TV series like Cheers, it is ingrained in general pop culture.

What we can hope for: A mysterious Institute, a big android-human dynamic, battles at Fenway Park , Harvard and the Waterfront.

2. Chicago

Chicago also has a pretty high place in Fallout lore. As of New Vegas, the Enclave's biggest presence is in Chicago. The Enclave has been the big bad in a few of the games now, but in New Vegas, ex-Enclave members were seen as pretty good people, wanting redemption for their past. ED-E the robot also showed a softer side to the Enclave. A game in which the Enclave has changed their beliefs (accepting everyone to survive), with the Brotherhood of Steel being the new villains could be a fascinating game with a powerful twist, and the best place to do that would be Chicago.

Chicago has seen it's fair share of apocalyptic events, and also has a huge presence in pop culture. Add in the fact that it's the third largest city in the U.S. and you have many compelling reasons to make it Chicago.

What we can hope for: Bringing back the Enclave in force, perhaps seeing a change in the Enclave (as was hinted in New Vegas), a slightly gangster feel, battles in the Willis Tower, Wrigley Field, the Shedd Aquarium and Navy Pier.

3. Toronto

Looking outside of the U.S. is another attractive option. World events were mentioned from time to time, including the U.S.-Canada conflict that led to the annexation of Canada before the Great War. Ronto (Futuristic Toronto) was even mentioned in The Pitt of being the envy of major cities and being well advanced.

Toronto is an attractive choice, not only for filling in back history of the series, but also because of the walkways connecting the buildings downtown, it's subway system and other unique aspects of the city - especially what role the futuristic CN Tower would take. The addition of snow would also give a different feel to the game, with survival mode in the snow and cold being a worthy challenge.

What we can hope for: A building on the American-Canadian War, new weaponry (As hinted in The Pitt DLC), battles at Maple Leaf Gardens, the Hockey Hall of Fame, CN Tower and Casa Loma

4. Denver

In the unreleased Van Buren, Denver was to be one of the major cities, with the city being a mess of bridges among skyscrapers while packs of dogs controlled the ground along with nearby Boulder bringing in a lot of creepy science missions. Despite it being cancelled, Denver still has been mentioned being controlled by dogs, with Caesars Legion having trouble with the city. Taking control of Denver from the dogs would be an awesome feature, since the relatively simple to beat dogs would be amped up to 11 with dozens of packs going after you as well as the Legion fighting around the city too.

Denver has been shown destroyed in numerous movies, like Waterworld, so it wouldn't be the first time Denver would be destroyed. Mountains and snow would bring new terrain, with places like Aspen and Boulder being enticing additions.

What we can hope for: A city infested with dogs, a Caesar's Legion showdown and battles at Denver Airport and in the mountains.

5. London

With England and the European wars being mentioned more and more, London would be an obvious choice for a location outside of North America. There has been talk of a European Resource War game for years, and a London game would give background as well as lingering effects of the War on Europe. English characters have also moved to the post apocalyptic U.S., showing just how bad the situation is in Europe – with a Europe setting we can see just how bad it is.

London, in addition to be one of the largest cities in the World and being in many post-apocalyptic movies, has landmarks galore, making every pitched battle be iconic. With groups such as the Brotherhood of Steel and the NCR being used more and more, new groups in the UK would offer fresh perspective as well as new struggles.

What we can hope for: Seeing how the war affected people outside of North America, a wartime London feel and battles at Tower Bridge, Big Ben, Parliament, Wembley – pretty much anywhere famous in London.

6. Phoenix

Going back to the Mojave has been mentioned by developers as a possiblity. In addition, many characters in New Vegas mentioned Arizona locations such as Tuscon and Flagstaff. Surrounded by desert, Phoenix could be a lot like New Vegas, but nearby forests could give a forest dynamic that hasn't been seen much in the games before.

Phoenix is rarely mentioned in the media, but is one of the largest cities in the U.S. Being in the heart of Caesar's Legion could give a wealth of opportunities – slave uprisings, building a “New Rome”, leading the Legion to get rid of slavery – there are many opportunities still in the desert, with New Vegas fans being happy to hear what has been happening there in the years after what the player did there in that most recent edition of Fallout.

What we can hope for: A Caesar's Legion showdown, more dangerous nuclear situations (if expanded into New Mexico) and battles in the desert a la New Vegas.

Fallout 4 is guaranteed to be exciting, and with the right location, it can make the experience all the more special.
